Junior Confirmation at Trinity

Our congregation believes that it is vitally important for our young people to get to know Jesus Christ and to become active participants in His Church. For us, confirmation is more than a ceremony—it is a process that helps each child’s faith progress from beginning to the beginnings of Christian maturity.

Purposes

  1. To introduce students to Jesus Christ, their Savior.
  2. To give students firsthand knowledge of God’s Word, the Holy Bible.
  3. To prepare students for Christian adulthood.

Tools

  1. The Bible
  2. The Small Catechism of Dr. Martin Luther
  3. Lutheran Catechesis, a textbook by The Rev. Peter Bender
  4. Classroom instruction, including extensive visual aids, games, and activities.
  5. Memorization work

Curriculum

We currently use Lutheran Catechesis, a three-year confirmation program. Students may take the first two years in any order. The first two years are prerequisites for the third year.

Year 1: Old Testament knowledge (during Sunday school)

Year 2: New Testament knowledge (during Sunday school)

Year 3: Topical Studies (a weekday night, chosen by the parents & pastor):

  1. The Ten Commandments
  2. The Apostle’s Creed
  3. The Lord’s Prayer
  4. The Sacrament of Holy Baptism
  5. Confession & Absolution
  6. The Sacrament of the Altar
  7. Worship
  8. Church Membership

Requirements

To be confirmed, all students must:

  1. attend all class sessions or submit makeup work for missed sessions;
  2. have memorized the chief parts of the Small Catechism by the end of Year 3;
  3. complete an exit interview with the pastor;
